"Norman Arter was born at Hanover (Ohio) November 24, 1862, being a son of A.R. Arter, for years a Hanover merchant. In March 1887, he went to San Francisco, California, where he was employed as salesman and manager with Goldberg, Bowen & Co., the largest wholesale and retail grocery firm on the Pacific coast, remaining with them for 20 years.
Following the Great San Francisco Fire of 1896, the firm of L. D. McLean & Co., was organized, Mr. Arter becoming its vice president. This firm has been most successful, doing immense business, and having two of the finest stores in the city.
In May 1888, Mr. Arter was married to Miss Nellie G. Schaffner. They had three children, Norman, Jr.; Harold; and Ruth."
