Bernice was born July 5, 1927 in Ontario, Oregon, the daughter of Nellie and Roger Atherton. She was raised on a farm near Fruitland, ID, and later moved to Nampa, ID, where she graduated from high school.
She was studying to become a nurse when she met Harold Metzger. They were married and had four boys.
After the death of Harold, who passed away from a long term illness, she worked and continued to raise her boys and later married Homer Benner.
They lived in Nampa until Homer's retirement and later moved to Boise. Together, Bernice and Homer made numerous quilts, afghans and rugs for family. They enjoyed trips to various national parks, Europe and the Oregon coast.
After the death of Homer, Bernice moved to Ontario. Bernice had a passion for gardening and was known for her "green thumb." She was an avid reader, loved playing computer card games and when not working on an afghan or quilt she would be figuring out complex crossword puzzles. Bernice enjoyed watching and feeding wild birds from her porch.
Above all, she dearly loved her doggie companions of past, ÖShasta, Lindi and Chicadee.
She is survived by sons: Harold (Charlotte) Metzger, of Colorado Springs, CO, Robert (Janet) Metzger, of Ontario, Charles (Marcie) Metzger, of Pahrumph, NV, and Leland (Jackie) Benner, of Chicago, IL; daughter-in-law, Cheryl Benner, of Mackay, ID; numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren; her "sister," Marcella Atherton, of Payette, ID; and a multitude of friends.
Bernice was preceded in death by her sons: Dennis Metzger and Loren Benner; her parents: Nellie and Roger Atherton; brothers: Wilbur, Charles, Lee, Jim and Raymond; and sisters: Mable, Fern and Louise.
A graveside service for family and friends will be held Wednesday, March 7 at 1 p.m. at the Evergreen Cemetery in Ontario.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to a charity of your choice in memory of Bernice.
