Gardner 'Gard' Leonard Dowdy was the son of Newman John Dowdy (son of Armstead Calloway Dowdy and Sylvia Lavodia Hatley) and Nancy Willena 'Lena' Fernandez. He was born 25 Feb 1899 in Floyd County, Georgia but the family moved to Alabama in abt 1895.

Gard Dowdy was the eleventh child of thirteen born to his parents. Twelve survived early childhood.

Abt 1917-1918, Gard registered for the WWI Civilian Draft and then the draft of men born before 1900 in Marion, MS. I do not know if he actually served active duty. It was at the time he registered for the WWI Military Draft that he met John Memphis Perry.

Gard's mother died 1925 in Marion, MS and that could be the reason that he left his family and is found boarding with the family of John Memphis and Nancy Perry, who were also living in Marion County at the time. The Perry family later moved to Pelahatchie, Rankin County, MS and Gard became a member of this Perry family in all respects.

Not much more is known about the life of Gard Dowdy except for the fact that he died sometime after 1930 but before 1939, while living with the Perry family and is buried in the Gulde Cemetery, along with other members of the Perry family. Markers were later placed on the graves, including that of Gard Dowdy.
