Samuel Burgess married (Hannah?) Mariah Hartshorn d/o Emmanuel Elisha Hartshorn and Margaret Morgan. At this time the only information on his parents is that bith were born in Maryland and his mother's name was Margaret. He also had a brother named John C. Burgess who married a lady named Mathilda.

In Memoriam

Samuel Burgess was born in Wayne county, Indiana, February 7, 1839, and came to Iowa in 1854 and settled on a farm in Wapello county near Eddyville, where he lived until the year 1900. At that time he moved to near Chillicothe, where he departed this life November 17, 1922, at the home of his son William, following a lingering illness. He was 83 years 10 months and 10 days of age.

From the Methodist church, with which he united eighteen years ago, the funeral was held Sunday, November 20. Rev. Mr. Singer officiated, and interment was made in Chillicothe cemetery.

On May 19, 1862, he was united in marriage to Maria Hartshorn. To this union nine children were born, seven of whom are living. Mrs. Etta Leeling of Nebraska, Mrs. George Pike of Kirkville, Mrs. Will Stuber of Fremont, Vern, John and Clarence of Burlington and William of Chillicothe survive. Also his widow, one brother, twenty-one grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren and a host of friends and neighbors.
