John S. Wier and his brothers were house carpenters and thought to have built their own vacation homes in Tampa, Florida, where Rachel and Susie and children lived. According to the children, they were always told their father worked for the railroad and gone away most of the time. Relatives told Lille later that he was stabbed in a brawl in the 1890s and killed. John S. Wier's third cousin Thomas Milton Wier (son of James Stewart Wier, son of Thomas Hamilton Wier, son of James Wier Jr. & Mary Hamilton) dealt in real estate in Tampa and apparently encouraged his cousins in Alabama to buy property there; when John S. Wier's third wife Susie died, she was buried in Thomas Milton Wier's plot in Tampa.
