He lived in the old Gay Homestead after he married, moving in 1852 to E. Putnam, CT and entered the mercantile business. Moved in 1869 to Tunbridge, VT and with two oldest sons, manufactured cloth and woolen yarns. In 1887, moved business to Cavendish, VT, and retired in 1890. The business was carried on by sons under the name of Gay Bros * Co, Manufacturers of Meltons and Fine Satinets.
