The son of Thomas O Coutant and his wife Hannah S Gardner 1801-1887, he was born in the Fly Mountain farming community (historic vicinity of 41.8944 -74.0028) in Esopus Township, Ulster County, NY. Oliver married Jane Ann (Maiden name unknown)b.1824. They had two sons; Peter D. b.1846; and George C b.1847. By 1870, the family was joined by Francis Coutant b.1857, whose exact relationship is unknown, and later by Thomas O Coutant b.1865, possibly a son of Peter D. or perhaps George C. They also apparently lived most of their lives in the Fly Mountain community.
