She was the daughter of Alexander Jefferson Cottingham and Mary Louiza Burns. She was a retired secretary with the United States Government at Fort Bragg, N.C. She was a life member of Saint Paul's United Methodist Church and wrote the church's history. She was also active in the Maxton Women's Civic Club.
