Howard Walter Rhodes, 71, of Chula Vista, Calif., died Sturday night, June 23, 1984, at the U.S. Naval Hospital in San Diego, Calif. He had entered the hospital the previous day for treatment and care.
He was the son of Frank B. and Amy Ellen Fickel Rhodes and was born in Miami County on Sep. 6, 1912. He grew up in this county and attended school here, having graduated from the Paola High School with the class of 1930.
He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on May 15, 1934, and went through his training in San Diego, Calif. During World War II he was serving on the USS Chicago when it was sunk. H served 20 years in the Navy and was discharged on June 1, 1954.
After retiring from the service Mr. Rhodes began working at the Chula Vista post office in California on Jan. 1, 1955. He continued with the position until he retired from the postal service June 21, 1974. He continued to make Chula Vista his home for the remainder of his lifetime.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Harold Edmund Rhodes.
Surviving are two brothers, Charles Rhodes and Frank Rhodes, both of Paola, and several nieces and nephews.
There will be a military service held and burial will be at Oceanside, Calif.
