SILAS W. HALE DIES AT GENEVA HOME SATURDAY
Aged Civil War Vet, Grandfather of Local Woman, Succumbs

Silas W. Hale, 92, one of Adam County's most prominent residents, and a veteran
of the Civil War, died at 3:15 o'clock Saturday morning at his home in Geneva.
He had been failing rapidly for the past three weeks but had been bedfast only
the last two days. Death was caused by senility. He was the grandfather of Mrs.
L. B. Smith of Berne.
With the death of Mr. Hale, only three veterans of the Civil War, are still
living in Adams county.
Mr. Hale enlisted in the Union army at the age of 16, joining the Fifty-third
Infantry, seeing service in Tennessee.
A native of Wells county, Mr. Hale lived for 65 years at Geneva. He was the
first telegraph operator at the Geneva station of the G. R. & I. railroad. While
employed by the railroad company, he started a grain elevator in that town.
Mr. Hale was elected to the senate of the Indiana general assembly in 1886,
representing the district composed of Adams, Jay and Blackford counties for four
years.
He was vice president of the Geneva bank for many years and on the Geneva school
board for 18 years.
At the expiration of his term as State Senator, Mr. Hale was appointed to the
board of trustees of Easthaven state hospital at Richmond, serving as treasurer
of the board. After 12 years on this board, he was transferred to the board of
state epileptic hospital at New Castle, serving for six years.
Mr. Hale was one of the oldest members of the Masonic order in the county, having
joined the organization in 1867.
A member of the Methodist Episcopal church, he served for many years as a trustee
of the Geneva church and was also a teacher of a class in the Sunday school.
BORN IN BLUFFTON
Mr. Hale was born in Bluffton, September 18, 1844, a son of Bowen and Mary A.
Dean-Hale. He at one time lived in Fort Wayne, returning to Bluffton, where he
was engaged in the grain and produce business.
He married Phoebe C. McFadden in 1869, his wife preceding him in death, August 7,
1906.
Shortly after their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Hale moved to Geneva.
Surviving are two children: Mrs. Clara Anderson of Geneva and Fred Hale of Los
Angeles, Calif. Four children, William, Frank, Stella and Helen, and three
brothers and two sisters are deceased.
Funeral services will be held at the home at 1:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon and
at 2 o'clock at the Geneva M. E. church. Rev. C. M. Fawns will officiate at the
services, with the Masonic lodge conducting ritualistic ceremonies. Burial will
be made in the Six Mile cemetery in Wells county.
