Civil War Confederate Army Officer. A graduate of Davidson College, he was admitted to the bar and practiced law in York County, South Carolina, and owned and edited the Yorkville "Enquirer". A member of the South Carolina Legislature at the start of the Civil War, he was elected Captain in the 12th South Carolina Infantry Regiment in 1861 and rose to the rank of Colonel by 1863. He led his men in the Battles of Gaines Mill (1862), Antietam (1862), Gettysburg (1863), and the Wilderness (1864). Having previously been wounded at Gaines Mill and Antietam, he was mortally wounded after the Wilderness. He was the cousin of Mary Boykin Miller Chesnut, the noted Civil War diarist.
