The Clarion Democrat, 2-1-1934 - The announcement of the death of William Harry Slater, one of Clarion’s well-known businessman and merchants, which occurred at his home at 2:30 a.m., Sunday, January 28, 1934, came as a shocking surprise to many of his townsmen who did not know he was sick. Mr. Slater had been ill for some months with dropsy and on the night previous to his death seemed to feel better and was in good spirits. He was laughing and talking before retiring for the night but shortly after retiring he suffered a spell with his heart and shortly after the doctor reached him he died. Mr. Slater was born at Slater’s Landing on the Clarion River March 28, 1856 and would have been 78 years of age in March. On March 25, 1880, he married Miss Sarah J. Lyons, who preceded him in death a number of years ago. Mr. Slater came to Clarion in 1874, where he has engaged in the mercantile business almost continually since. He is survived by the following children: T. L., Chicago; G. A., Carnegie; A. F., Chatfield, O.; E. W. and Wayne, at home. Two sisters, Mrs. Frank Phillips of Clarion and Mrs. J. H. Fleming, of Blairs Corners, 21 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren also survive. Funeral services were conducted in the Jenkins Funeral Home at 2:30 o’clock Tuesday afternoon. Burial was in the Clarion cemetery.
