In the early 1940s, Joseph went to live with his sister, Rose Mangin Akre and her husband in Falls Church, Virginia outside Washington, DC. There he met Dorothy Parker (1923 - 2004). They married and Joseph brought Dorothy to Erie. There they raised three children: two sons and a daughter.
During World War II, Joseph served in the Army Air Corps in the Burma-China theater. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
Joseph was a plasterer by trade. He was also a talented woodworker, making many items of wooden furniture that always had that "Joe Mangin" signature look to them.
Joseph died on Aug 1, 2002, just short of his 85th birthday.
