He served in the United States Navy overseas during WWII. After he was honorably discharged from the Navy he began working for KONG Railroad, retiring after many years of service. He was united in marriage to Lyda Mae Hunter on May 31, 1946 in Columbus, Kansas. After their marriage they made their home in Fairland, Oklahoma where they stayed there entire life.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Fairland for 65 years.
Leon was an outdoorsman who loved to hunt, fish and tend to his garden.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lyda Burris, 2 brothers, Melvin Burris and Norman Burris, 3 sisters, Hazel Harper, Maxine Mercer and Velma.
He is survived by 2 sons, Roger Burris and his wife, Margaret of Fairland, Oklahoma and Bill Burris and his wife, Karla of Duenweg, Missouri and 1 daughter, Carolyn Bechler, of Fairland, Oklahoma. Also surviving is 1 brother, Robert (Bobby) Burris, of Fairland, Oklahoma, 8 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services for Leon Edward Burris will be held 11:00AM, Monday, March 26, 2012 at the First Baptist Church of Fairland in Fairland, Oklahoma. Visitation will be held Sunday afternoon from 3:00PM to 4:00PM at the Paul Thomas Funeral Home in Miami. Interment will be in the Fairland Cemetery with full Military Honor's. Pallbearers will be Jimmy Burris, Corey Burris, Billy Burris, Jr., Jason King, Bobby King and Austin Kinsey. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Paul Thomas Funeral Home, Miami.
