FROSTBURG,MARYLAND -- Charlotte Pearl Opel, 75, of Frostburg Village Nursing Home and formerly of Walnut Street, Frostburg, went to be with her Lord and Savior on April 21, 2004.

Born June 3, 1928 in Finzel, Charlotte was the fifth of eight children born to James and Anna (Burdock) Clark.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Russell J. Opel; and one daughter, Shirley, in 1944; two brothers, James and Allen Clark; two sisters, Catherine Folk and Helen Caton.

Charlotte worked at Carpenter's egg plant before working at Maplehurst Country Club and Grant's Market. She retired from Frostburg State University, and she was one of a group of 14 people at the college to ever hit the lottery in Western Maryland.

She was a member of Saint Michael's Church, Frostburg, Catholic Daughters of America, Frostburg Moose Lodge 348, Farrady Post 24 American Legion and the Knights of Columbus 1442. Charlotte loved to bowl, shuffle board and tend to her garden. She enjoyed trips to Atlantic City and Charlestown, W.Va., to play the slots with her many friends. She was also an avid scrabble player.

Charlotte is survived by two daughters. Joyce Thompson and husband Wayne, Burtonsville and Pamela Opel, Frostburg; one son, Gordon Opel and wife Jean, Midlothian; one brother, Paul Clark; two sisters, Betty Housel and Shirley Blank, both of Frostburg; six grandchildren, Kelly Whitehorn, Texas, Wayne Thompson Jr., Georgia, Travis Thompson, Burtonsville, Gordon Opel Jr., Frostburg, Shawn Opel, Baltimore and Christopher Opel, Frostburg; and three great-grandchildren.

Friends will received at the Durst Funeral Home, P.A., 57 Frost Ave., Frostburg, on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Christian Wake Service will be held Friday at 8:30 p.m. by Father William Moody.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Michael's Catholic Church on Saturday at 11 a.m. with Monsignor Paul Byrnes as celebrant.

Interment will be in the Mount Zion United Methodist Cemetery, Route 40, West of Frostburg.

Pallbearers will be the five grandsons, Wayne Jr., Travis, Gordon Jr., Shawn, Christopher, and nephew Glenn "Bud" Blank. Honorary pallbearers will be Timothy Clark and Charles Ballases.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Michael's Church, 44 E. Main St., Frostburg, MD 21532.
