Charles Dakin was an architect and the brother of James Harrison Dakin (1806-1852), the architect of the Old State Capitol in Baton Rouge. Masters of Greek revival and Gothic styles, the Dakins, originally from New York, enjoyed great success after their move to the New Orleans area. Together, or individually, they designed the St. Charles Hotel, the Merchant's Exchange,the Verandah Hotel, St. Peters Church, and others.
The details of his death are unknown. There is speculation that he may have been working at Bocage and/or Ashland plantation, both of which are located near the cemetery where he is buried, became ill and died before being able to return to the city. He was 28 years old.
