Carlos and George fought in the Western campaigns, including Vicksburg. Carlos was mustered out in November 1863 because of poor health, after having been hospitalized for "ague, dysentery, chronic diarrhea, rheumatism and congestive chills".
After farming in Randolph for two years, Carlos returned to Canada for another two, partnering with Oscar Wetherell, the husband of his younger sister, Lois. In 1868, he moved his family to the gold mining community of Camptonville, California, where he had a dry goods store and was postmaster. He removed his family to Santa Ana, CA in 1880. There, he helped establish the Orange County Savings and Farmers and Merchants Banks and had "several fine fruit farms" (see, "The House of Mansur", 1926, Thomas & Betts, "History of Yuba County", 1880 and their "History of Orange County", 1890.)
Carlos and Letty had six children, with one born in Randolph, four in Camptonville and the last in Santa Ana (see links, below).
Carlos and Letty are buried in Fairhaven Memorial Park, next to George Gale and his second wife, Lucy. Several other family members are in the same plot.
