Civil War: Company G, McKeage's Battalion, Pennsylvania Infantry (100 Days); and Company F, 205th Pennsylvania Infantry

John K. Aultz was born in Mifflin County, Pennsylvania, where he trained as a stone mason. When Confederate forces crossed into Pennsylvania in late June 1863, Governor Andrew Curtin issued an emergency call-up of short-term regiments. Consequently, John enlisted as a private for 100 days on July 3, 1863, and he was mustered into Company G, [John] McKeage's Battalion, Pennsylvania Infantry. Following the retreat of Confederate forces he was mustered out on August 8, 1863. The following year he re-enlisted as a private for 3 years at Lewistown, Pennsylvania, August 29, 1864, and was mustered into Company F, 205th Pennsylvania Infantry, at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, September 1, 1864. After the war ended he was mustered out at Alexandria, Virginia, on June 2, 1865, and returned to Mifflin County. He married Catherine "Kate" Finley in Mifflin County on March 12, 1879. The couple soon moved to Red Cloud, Nebraska, where two of John's younger brothers, Leonard and Alfred, later joined them. He filed for a Civil War veteran disability pension at Red Cloud on December 14, 1889, and received certificate No. 571,007. After working for several years as a stone mason in Red Cloud he retired to Santa Ana, Los Angeles County, California, in October 1908. Eleven days after his death, Catherine filed for a widow's pension in Santa Ana on August 27, 1924, and received certificate No. 954,284.
