Civil War: Company C, 12th Iowa Infantry

Edward John Abbott was the third child of Eli Abbott and Eveline Andress. When he was about 7 years old his parents moved the family to West Union, Iowa (1856 Iowa Census, 1860 US Census). During the Civil War, Edward, then 18 and still a resident of West Union, enlisted as a private for 3 years on October 6, 1861, and was mustered into Company C, 12th Iowa Infantry, on October 24. Private Abbott was captured by Confederate forces during the Battle of Shiloh, Tennessee, April 6, 1862. He was paroled and after being exchanged he re-enlisted as a "veteran volunteer" December 23, 1863, and was re-mustered into his company on January 5, 1864. He was mustered out at Memphis, Tennessee, January 20, 1866.
He married (1) .....
He went to New York City and applied for a U.S. passport on May 4, 1888, and sometime soon thereafter he relocated to Santa Ana, California, where he married (2) Mrs. Vesta Ann (Spencer) Fiske on 18 May 1890. This was the twice-widowed Vesta's third marriage. Edward's brother William Sheridan Abbott and brother-in-law, Clinton Andre (husband of Dell Abbott), served as witnesses. He applied for a Civil War veterans pension at Santa Ana on September 1, 1891, and received certificate No. 711,952. He was a member of Santa Ana's John Sedgwick Post, No. 17, Grand Army of the Republic. Edward died a fews weeks after having surgery. Two weeks after his death Vesta applied for a Civil War widow's pension October 23, 1895, and received certificate No. 437,594. Vesta would go on to marry two more times: (4) the widower Andrew Graham on September 20, 1899, and after his death at Santa Ana in 1905; (5) Lyman M. Cross, widower of her sister Jane Spencer, at Garden Grove in 1911. Lyman died in 1912 and when the 5-times-widowed Vesta died in 1934 she was buried beside her 4th husband, Andrew Graham. Three of Edward's brothers were also Civil War veterans; Byron Abbott (Co. B, 7th Ohio Infantry), Squire Abbott (Co. H, 18th Iowa Infantry), and William Sheridan Abbott (Co. F, 38th Iowa Infantry).
