Hooper Greene
William Hooper Greene, 100, died Friday, Sept. 5, 2008, at Autumn Care Nursing Home.
A native of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Robert Taylor Greene and Glennie Fine Greene. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Lona Kirkpatrick Greene, who died in 1995; one son, William Clifford Greene; an infant daughter, Deborah Elaine Greene; a great-grandson, Justin Eisbacher; five brothers, Hobert, Robert, Elmer, Raymond and Jack Greene; and three sisters, Bonnie Fisher, Georgie Nix and Martha Lois Greene.
He was a self-employed heating and plumbing contractor. He enjoyed woodworking, building grandfather clocks and had built fiddles for each of his family members. He built houses, including the house he lived in, and enjoyed raising sheep up until the age of 93 and also enjoyed gardening. He was a member of Ratcliffe Cove Baptist Church.
He is survived by two daughters, Vivian Kelley and her husband, Jack, of Waynesville and Louise Nanney and her husband, Roy, of Morristown, Tenn.; one sister, Edna Swanger, of Clyde; five grandchildren, Emily K. Nelson and her husband, David, of Alaska, Sharon Blair of Daytona Beach, Fla., Shelia Lopez of California, Ed Kelley and his wife, Jo, of Waynesville and Phil Kelley and his wife, Vicki, of Mars Hill; and eight great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. today in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Revs. Jay Jones and Bill Jenkins officiating. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2 p.m. prior to the service.
