Samuel Shepard McInnis; age 89, a retired civil engineer and a resident of Baton Rouge, died at his residence on Tuesday, March 20, 2012. He was a native of Sterlington, Louisiana, a veteran of World War II who served with the 2nd and 3rd Army Rangers, and was a recipient of the Purple Heart/Bronze Star Croix de Guerre.


Sam attended Tulane University and Vanderbilt University and graduated from Louisiana State University (LSU). He was Houma District Commissioner of the Boy Scouts of America.


Sam was survived by his wife, Bobbye L. Tucker McInnis; daughters, Elizabeth Estelle McInnis, Madelon Gillis, Margaret Howard and Angie Scott; sons, Samuel Shepard McInnis Jr., Bennie Douglas McInnis and William Tabor V; 15 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.


Sam was preceded in death by his father Norman Kenneth McInnis and mother Dr. Bessie Shepard McInnis.


Visiting was at the Rabenhorst Funeral Home East chapel until the religious service. Entombment was in the Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Baker, Louisiana. In lieu of flowers, Memorial donations to the Generations Hospice was suggested in lieu of flowers.

Sam S. McInnis, is 21 year old son of the late Norman Kenneth McInnis, Sr. and Mrs. Bessie McInnis. He attended school in Sterlington, Louisiana, and Ouachita Parish High School, where he distinguished himself as an all mid-Southern tackle in 1940 and All State Tackle in 1941. He attended Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge during summer school on a football scholarship and signed with the Reserve Officer Training Corp (R. O. T. C.) while there. He attended Northeast Junior College in Monroe, Louisiana, and received promotion to the rank of Cadet Major in his battalion. April 28, 1943, he received notice to report to Camp Beauregard, Louisiana. From there he was sent to Camp Maxie, Texas, where he completed basic training. At the present time he is a student in Civil Engineering under the A. S. T. U. program.
