Mr. Clarke passed away on Tuesday, March 20, 2012 at the Lineville Health and Rehabilitation Center. A native and lifelong resident of Clay County, he worked for many years as a diesel mechanic and welder for a number of constructions companies all over the Southeastern United States including Hardaway Construction, Ledbetter Construction, Hodges Construction and Pawnee Construction. During World War II, Mr. Clarke helped build runways at Eglin AFB in Florida. He also helped build roads for the Interstate Highway system, as well as hurricane levees and railroads.
When not working away from home, he loved to work at his home and in his community, be it digging ditches or moving rocks. Earnest loved to move dirt with a pick and shovel! As a friend and community servant, he was a member of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, The Lake Gerald Association and The Delta Community Club. Mr. Clarke's family also wishes to express their deep gratitude to the staff of the Lineville Health and Rehabilitation Center. He spent the last two years of his life there and also considered it his home.
Mr. Clarke is survived by one daughter, Meg C. Horne (Hobert) of Coosada, AL; one son, Earnest R. "Sonny" Clarke Jr. (Dianne) of Delta; one sister, Evelyn Lucas (Jack) of Huntsville, AL; five grandchildren: Stanley Clarke, Misty Cameron, Sonya Hale, Aaron Horne and Megan Horne; twelve great-grandchildren: Jesse Hale, Rachel Hale, Brittany Clarke, Blake Clarke, Logan Cameron, Andrew Cameron, Walker Cameron, Eirene Horne, Petra Horne, Caleb Horne, Ezra Horne and Zoe Horne.
Mr. Clarke was preceded in death by his parents: Leroy Will Clarke and Vernie Lee Lester Clarke; his wife of 64 years, Jeanette C. Clarke; one daughter, Sandra Chesnut; three sisters: Eunice Tilloson, Evada Chapman and Emma Mary Clarke; three brothers: Eulas Clarke, Emory Clarke and Earl Clarke.
Pallbearers will be Byron Clarke, Benny Hunt, Stanley Clarke, Aaron Horne, Steve Sumners, Mike Carpenter, Jesse Hale and Clark Chapman. Staff of the Lineville Health and Rehabilitation Center will serve as honorary pallbearers.
The family will receive friends at Benefield Funeral Home in Lineville on Saturday, March 24, 2012 from 10:00 A.M. until 12:00 noon. Mr. Clarke will then lie in state at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church from 12:30 P.M. until service time at 2:00 P.M. The family will accept flowers; however, memorial contributions may be made to the Mt. Moriah Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Donna Frames, 2166 Mt. Moriah Road, Delta, AL 36258.
