Our records show Robert Shannon's father Robert Shannon, Sr., was a successful merchant in the Irish Province of Munster. We believe he and Robert, Jr both may have been born there. The results of research have shown that due to political and religious issues in Ireland, especially regarding the Presbyterians there (the Shannons were predominantly Presbyterians), many of them were required to relocate from northern Ireland (the geographic origin/homeplace of the Shannons in Ireland - before migrating there from Scotland), into southern Ireland's Province of Munster. *His wife's name remains unknown.
This could justify why the family moved from northern, to southern Ireland, especially in the 1600s.
Robert was born in Munster, Ireland, the last generation of Shannons actually born in Ireland. His descending generations in order were: son John, grandson John II, great-grandson John Shannon III, 2nd great-grandson William, 3rd great-grandson Henry, 4th great-grandson Evin, 5th great-grandson Wiley K. Shannon, and 6th great-grandaughter Rebecca Shannon Walker. Robert was the ancestor who migrated to British Colonial America, sailing across the Atlantic on the HMS Friends Goodwill in 1717.He made his home in what is now Lancaster Co., PA.
*Note: Rebecca Shannon Walker was my great-grandmother. We also want to show our appreciation to our cousin Melinda Shannon Freels for all of her work and research in providing all of our ancient Shannon family history.
