Daughter of Edward & Caroline Mahan/Rusk. Mary Ellen, nickname "Minnie," married William M Ward September 15, 1886 in Tippecanoe County. To this union came four children Avanelle, Blanche, Alva Moronen Sr. and Samuel Harold. Family story tells us Minnie and William attempted to homestead land in Oklahoma in the early 1900's. They had children Blanche and Alva with them. Avanelle stayed in Indiana working and Samuel had not been born. The family lived in a, "Soddy," (home build of sod earth) and no schools were available for the children. Hardships were too great and the family returned to Indiana after 3 years.
