Hattie Mae Bailey Murray's cremated remains were never taken after her death and are still available at the Oregon State Hospital to be claimed by anyone who is related. More information about unclaimed cremains at OSH is available at http://www.oregon.gov/oha/osh/Pages/cremains.aspx A book by David Maisel and a short documentary film by Ondi Timoner & Robert James, both entitled "Library of Dust" also provide more information.

Hattie was born on 11/24/1893 in Oregon. Her father, William Robert Bailey, was born in Kentucky in 1850. Her mother, Lucille "Lucy" Lovelace, was born in Missouri in 1859. They were married about 1877. William and Lucy's had 10 children with 8 being alive in 1900. Their surviving children included: Julia C. (born in 1878), James Edward (in 1882), Cora Maud (in 1884), Eva E. (in 1888), Charles Robert (in 1891), Hattie and her twin Mattie (in 1893), and Annie "Myrtle" (in 1897). Except for Julia, James and Cora who were born in Missouri all the others were born in Oregon.

The Bailey family moved to Oregon in the mid-1880s. At the time of the 1900 census Hattie was 6 years old, living with her parents and siblings in Milwaukie, Clackamas County, Oregon where her father was a day laborer.

During the 1910 census, Hattie was 16, attending school and living with her parents, brother Charles, her twin Mattie, and younger sister Myrtle in Clark County, Washington which is just across the Columbia River from Portland, Oregon. Her father was doing odd jobs for a living. It is believed Hattie's sister Eva died between 1900 and 1910. The others who were not at home had married, but were living nearby. In 1905 sister Cora married Fred Ziegler and later moved to Portland where Fred was a laborer in a sawmill. In 1906 brother James had married Bertha Tomlinson and by the 1910 census they were living with the first of their many children in Portland where James was a laborer in the concrete industry. In 1908 Hattie's sister Julia had married Charles W. Douthit in Clark County and by the time of the 1910 census they were farming in Clark County, Washington and had a 1 year old son, Ralph. Hattie's father died on 2/12/1918 in Portland.

On 2/8/1919 Hattie married Maurice B. Murray in Vancouver, Clark County, Washington. At that time Hattie (age 25) was living in Multnomah County (probably Portland) and Maurice (age 30) was living in neighboring Columbia County. Hattie's mother witnessed the marriage. Like Hattie, Maurice was a native Oregonian. He was born about 1889.

In the census of 1920 Hattie and Maurice were in Portland with their infant daughter Alma. Maurice was a machinist in a photograph company. Hattie's mother and twin, Mattie, were living next door. Brother Charles was living elsewhere in Portland (possibly with his wife Nellie). By the time of the 1920 census Hattie's sister Myrtle Bailey Wickwire had been admitted to the Oregon State Hospital, a residential facility in Salem, Oregon for the treatment of people with mental illness. She was listed among the patients at the state hospital on the census of 1920, but had been transferred to the Eastern Oregon State Hospital in Pendleton, Oregon before 1928 and was listed there in the 1930 and 1940 censuses. Hattie's sister Julia Bailey Douthit had been admitted to the Western State Hospital for the Insane before 1920 and was listed there in the censuses of of 1920, 1930 and 1940.

In October 1923 sister Mattie married Jess L. Howard. Hattie's mother died in Portland on 2/25/1929. During the 1930 census Hattie was was living in Southwest Portland with her husband and their 4 children (all born in Oregon): Alma Louise (in 1919), Lila M. (about 1923), Wayne Maurice (in 1924) and Richard Earl (about 1927). Maurice was employed as a pipe fitter.

On 4/27/1931, at the age of 37, Hattie was admitted to the Oregon State Hospital, the same institution where her sister Myrtle had been patient in the 1920s. She was diagnosed to have manic depressive disorder. After being a patient at the institution for only 5 days she died there of "maniacal exhaustion" on 5/3/1931. From her death certificate it appears as if the hospital did not have records of her full name, parents' names, marital status, or husband's name.

In October 1936 Hattie's daughter Alma Murray married Merle Kennedy. During the 1940 census they were dairy farming in Chimacum, Jefferson County, a rural community on the Olympic Peninsula in northwestern Washington. They had 3 children at that time. Meanwhile Hattie's husband, Maurice, was working as a painter and living with 2 of the 3 younger children in Irondale, Jefferson County, Washington - Lila (17) and Richard (12). Son Wayne (15) was living next door with his aunt and uncle, Grace and Archie Stone.

On 1/2/1937 Hattie's brother Charles married Imo J. Carlson. It was at least his second marriage. He died on 9/1/1950. Sister Julia Bailey Douthit died at the Fort Steilacoom institution in Washington on 11/2/1955. It appears neither Julia's husband William nor their son Ralph ever married. Sister Myrtle died at the Pendleton institution on 11/16/1955 just 2 weeks after her sister Julia. It is not known whether Myrtle had children or not. Myrtle's ashes were not claimed and were buried with other patients in a common grave at Olney Cemetery in Pendleton. They are no longer available to be returned to the family. Brother James died in Oregon in April 1963. Mattie Bailey Howard died on 7/3/1965 and was buried with her husband at the Willamette National Cemetery near Portland. She was survived by at least her daughter. Sister Cora divorced Fred Ziegler, lived in Los Angeles where she was a dressmaker in 1940 and died in California on 5/6/1976. It appears she never had children.

Hattie's son Richard Earl Murray died on 8/14/1946. His brother Wayne Maurice Murray died in August 1979. His sister Alma Louise Murray Kennedy died on 9/12/1996. It is not known what became of Hattie's daughter Lila Murray. She has not yet been found is documents after 1940.
