Willie Mae Burchfield was born October 15, 1925 to Felix Marion Burchfield and Pearl Kizziah Burchfield in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama. She was the youngest of 11 children.

Willie Mae lived much of her life in north Alabama around the Vance/Abernant area. She married Lawrence Scruggs on September 30, 1944. They moved to Columbus, Georgia, around 1946 or 1947. They had two children together, Larry Lamar and Johnny Lem. After Lawrence died in 1958, Willie Mae stayed in Columbus. She married Jack Curtis Brown later.

Willie Mae was a strong-minded, independent woman for the age. She owned and operated her own daycare, Peter Pumpkin, in Columbus, Georgia. The original building for the daycare still stands off Warm Springs Road.
