Orville Buck Passes Away - Obituary Idaho Times 1905-02-10 Page 1

About 8'oclock last evening February 8, one of our oldest and most respected citizens, Orville Buck, crossed the might river and joined the great majority in the realms of eternal life.

Mr. Buck had suffered some years, more or less intensely, with rheumatism. While thus afflicted he continued to attend to his affairs and was seldom confined to the house. About two years ago his complaint became much worse and he sold his ranch and moved into town. During his residence in town, though in good weather he has often been seen on our streets, he had become so badly crippled that it was with great difficulty he managed to walk around.

Mr. Buck was born on August 7, 1828, at Buckfield, Maine, his parents being Elisha and Caroline (Bridgham) Buck, the father having been born in the same county of Oxford, where the grandfather Nathaniel Buck, was one of the original settlers. The father, born in 1702, was a veteran of the war of 1812, and an unswerving democrat in political creed. He lived an eminently useful life and died in 1854.

Mr. Buck married on March 31, 1854, with Miss Helen M. Heald, a native of Maine and daughter of Israel and Jane (Standish) Heald, a lineal descendant of the historic Miles Standish of Mayflower fame. Mr. and Mrs. Buck, the latter of whom survives him, have seven children, Alice, Winthrop, James A., John H. Ellis, George A. and Helen, all of whom are living.

Mr. Buck has long been identified with the interests of eastern Idaho, where he was one of the early pioneers of the present county of Bingham, being the first to make a permanent home in the beautiful Willow creek valley, and also the first to take out an irrigating ditch for agricultural purposes in the upper Snake River valley. He ever showed himself possessed of those sturdy qualities which win success, becoming one of the leading farmers and stockmen of Bingham County. His name has ever been synonymous with honor, integrity and good citizenship. He was gifted with many Gods given qualities of head and heart, and few who pass over the great river leave such a host of friends to mourn his departure.

Obituary

Orville Buck

The Idaho Register, Friday, February 10, 1905, Idaho Falls, Idaho, Page 1

Again, are we called upon to chronicle the death of one of the old pioneers of this county. About 8 o'clock on Wednesday evening the spirit of Orville Buck took its flight and passed over the great divide to the realms beyond.

Mr. Buck had been failing in health for the past two years but had been able to be around and attend to business until within the past two weeks. He was one of the oldest residents of this section of the state, having settled her in 1875, and locating the first ranch on Willow creek. Here he built a home and lived until a few months ago, when he bought property and moved into the city. His farm was one of the landmarks of the Willow creek section.

Orville Buck was born in Buckfield, Maine, August 7, 1828, and was therefore 76 years, 5 months and 1 day old. On March 31, 1854, he married Miss Helen M. Heald, who was also a native of Main and a lineal descendant of the historic Miles Standish. His wife and seven children still survive him. The children are Alice (Mrs. C. L. Pelot), Winthrop, James A., John H., Ellis, George A., and Helen (Mrs. Payne). All are living in this county except Winthrop who is in Denver.

Mr. Buck was a man highly esteemed by all who knew or had dealings with him. His word was as good as his bond, and his advice in all matters was always sound and reliable. His familiar face will be missed upon the streets of Idaho Falls.

The funeral takes place from the Episcopal church this afternoon, Rev. J. H. McPherson officiating.
