DIED IN PRAYER.

George Hevern Dies Suddenly Some Time Last Night.

George Hevern was found dead in his room at the home of his son Ramsey, on the west side, this morning. Failing to answer when called this morning his son went to his room and then discovered his father by his bed cold in death. When discovered the aged gentleman was in a kneeling attitude with his hand in supplication, and was undoubtedly engaged in prayer when the Death Angel made its appearance and claimed his spirit.
George Hevern was born March 25, 1817, and at the time of his death was in his 80th year. He was married to Katherine Nipple March 3, 1840, and to this union eleven children were born--ten of whom survive. The wife died July 19, 1894.
The children who survive are Mrs. A. B. Parrott, Mrs. Jas. Tucker, Ramsey, of Iowa City; Mrs. Mary Lumbard, Kimball, South Dakota; Mrs. Ida Nipple, Springfield, Mo.; Joel Hevern, New York; Charles Hevern, St. Louis; Isiah Hevern, Des Moines; and Harvey Hevern, near Millersburg.
The deceased has been a resident of this county for many years and was one of our most respected citizens.
The funeral services will be conducted at the residence at two o'clock Sunday afternoon.

A shorter obituary in the March 5, 1897 edition of The Iowa Citizen includes the additional information:

Rev. Dr. McCord will conduct the services. Mr. Hevern came to this county in 1846 from Juniata county, Penn., and had resided here continuously since.
