Julius served as a Junior Third Mate, SS Scottsburg, Merchant Marines during World War II. He resided in Baltimore, Maryland prior to the war. Julius was declared "Missing in Action" when the SS Scottsburg was hit by a torpedo from the German submarine U- 502 and sunk off Venezuela during the war. He was awarded the Mariner's Medal. His remains were not recovered. His family had a Memorial Stone placed in the Willamette National Cemetery which is not far from where his grandson, Karl Jack was laid to rest Memorial # 66503213
