Dave Orr came from South Carolina as a young man with his father and brother George. When the Civil War began, he crossed the mountains into Tennessee and enlisted in the Union Army. He joined CO H, Third Tennessee Mounted Infantry Regiment and was taken prisoner during his tenure. When he returned to Graham County, most of the residents were Democrats and had supported the Confederacy, so Dave and his brother received a lot of harrassment. They became staunch Republicans, in opposition, and that party allegiance remained among many of their offspring.
Dave and his brother George used their mustering-out pay to buy property on Slickrock. This area became known as the Dave Orr Mountains.
Dave first married Alzena Williams, daughter of William "Bill" and Triphena Millsaps Williams who moved from Monroe County to Graham County in the 1850's. The marriage occurred about 1862 when Alzena was about 17. The marriage ended around 1870, after 3 children were born: Bartley "Bart", Elizabeth, and George. Dave then married Mary Medlin (daughter of Brittian and Rachel Jenkins Medlin) and Alzena married Stephen H. Smith. Dave and Mary had a dozen children, including Andrew Jackson, Sally, Sarah, Mary "Cissy", David, Charles Franklin, Arkie Dell, James William, Jeremiah, Patrick Levi, Nora, and Easter.
When he died, Dave was buried in this cemetery far back in the Dave Orr Mountains between Bear Creek and Slick Rock. Over twenty other persons are buried here in graves with unmarked rocks to designate burial spots.
