How did two of our aunts (Lillie and Effie) end up in Astoria? It had to do with our grandfather Torger's (1869-1938) first wife Eveline Kolseth (1872-1910), and in particular her sister Sanna Kolseth (1876-1959). Eveline and her parents and sister immigrated from Kristiania, Norway (Oslo), to New York City in September 1886 on the ship Angelo of the Kloed line. Their destination was Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin. The daughters were age ten and fourteen when they arrived in Chippewa Falls. Their mother died in 1891. And in 1894 they lost their father. The two daughters, age twenty-two and nineteen, moved across the street to live with a neighbor family. Eveline worked as a dressmaker and Sanna clerked in a store in Chippewa Falls. Eveline married Torger Larsen in the house in which the Kolseth girls were living. After her sister's wedding Sanna went to Minneapolis to work. In 1899 Sanna (now twenty years old) married Henry Bowe, who made his living as a barber. In 1900 Sanna and her husband were living with Torger Larsen and her sister in their Chippewa Falls home. By 1902 the Bowe family was living in the Dakotas. They had two children Elwin and Harold Richard. In 1904 Sanna acquired a new husband, Elmer Luther Tennant, also a barber (1875-1927). It is not known if Henry died or if there was a divorce. Sanna's two boys from here on would be named Tennant in the census records. A third child, Betsy Tennant, was born prior to 1910 but disappears from the record suggesting she died in childhood. Harold was always referred to as Richard or Dick. Somewhere along the line he started going by his middle name and became Richard Tennant. In 1907 Sanna and family were living just outside of Astoria in Hammond, Oregon. In 1920 Sanna and family were living in Astoria running a boarding house at 32 Exchange Street. In 1927 she became a widow. Elwin was working on the docks in Astoria. Richard was now twenty-seven-years-old and single.

Around the time of her sister's death in 1910 Sanna and children made a visit to Wisconsin. At this visit Richard Tennant was eight years old. His cousin and future wife Effie was three. Some twenty years later around 1930 unmarried Effie made a trip to visit her Astoria aunt. Our mother told me that Richard followed Effie back to Wisconsin where in 1932 they (Richard, age thirty and Effie, age twenty-five) had a child (Billie E. Tennant) who died in 1934 and is buried in Nora Cemetery, Rice Lake. I have been unable to find a marriage record. They likely were married in either Rice Lake or Astoria. For the rest of the story see Lillie Koski's memorial.

The 1910 census listed Sanna and her family as living in Willow Lakes, Clark County, South Dakota. Clark County is near Brookings County, South Dakota where a fairly large Kjolseth family lived in 1880, 1900, and in 1910. They were all born in Norway but they did not arrive in the USA in the same year as Sanna.

A biography by Sanna's niece Martha Porath reads, "A big event one summer. Mother's sister, out Tante Sanna fromthe West, was coming to visity us. She had two boys my age and Arthur's--Elwin and Richard (Dick). Tante brought pears for a great treat. I was in bed with the mumps. I turned my face to the wall and cried because I couldn't chew a delicious pear. Sanford became Tante's favorite. She called him 'Tante's dokke man.' (Aunties doll-man)." This suggests that Harold and Richard are the same person and that he was now going by his middle name. This visit likely took place in 1910.

In 1920 Sanna was living in Astoria running a boarding house. She appeared in the census of 1920 in Astoria, Clatsop County, Oregon, age 43, b. Norway, Father b. Norway, Mother b. Norway, arrived in USA in 1886, Elwin and Harold Tennant and her husband were all at the boarding house.
