Dr. Fredreick J. "Skip" Hander, 81, of Fort Smith, Arkansas died Tuesday, October 9, 2012. He was born in Belton, Texas in 1931.

Fred served primarily Logan & Franklin counties in Arkansas as a large and small animal veterinarian for almost 30 years, based out of Paris & Booneville. He was an active member of the Arkansas Veterinary Medical Association and was selected by then Govenor Dale Bumpers to serve two terms on the Arkansas Veterinary Medicine Examining Board. In 1984, Fred was honored as the Arkansas Veterinarian of the Year.
Fred embodied the "Can Do Spirit" instilled in him by his family and Texas A&M University (Class of '54) and loved serving his God and his community. In addition to building the Paris Veterinary Hospital and practice with his partners, he was a community leader serving on the Paris School Board, leading Boy Scouts and serving as a board member and chairman of the board at the Paris First Methodist Church. He was an avid nature lover, who served on the boards of the Arkansas Native Planet Society and the Arkansas Audubon Society. He took great joy in participating in the yearly bird counts and annual society meetings.
In Fred's retirement, he began to serve the Fort Smith community after making his home there with his wife Helen in 1993. He served by being an active volunteer with Meals on Wheels, Mount Magazine Girl Scout Council Board of Directors, Sebastian County Humane Society animal shelter and St. Edwards Mercy Hospital. He was also an active member of the RIver Blenders Barbershop Quartet chorus and the First Presbyterian Church and served on their board.
Most recently Fred served as the Sebastian County representative for the Area Agency on Aging, working with other representatives from around Arkansas developing recommendations on legislation to benefit senior citizens.
