Daughter of Maria Sanford MacDougall and William MacDougall, and the granddaughter of James and Sarah Sanford. Sarah was born in Canada and attended school there along with her 10 siblings. She moved west to California in 1871. On May 19, 1872 she married the widower Thomas Loney. They became the parents of 8 children raising them on a large ranch that her husband Thomas purchased in the 1870's As the ranch grew, the family grew. The ranch was located about nine miles from Grass Valley on McCourtney Road. She and her husband were members of the Christian Church in Grass Valley.
