Nella Mae Adams
Nella Mae Adams of Springview, Nebraska died Saturday March 3, 2012 at the Parkside Manor in Stuart, Nebraska. She was 98 years old. Nella Mae Cockrell was born November 11, 1913 in Alvord, Texas, the second of three children born to Claud and Maud (Phillips) Cockrell. She married Everett Victor Adams on April 15, 1936 in Chillicothe, Texas.
During World War II, while Everett was fighting in Europe, Nella Mae supported the war effort by making military supplies in a converted factory in Chickasha, Oklahoma. Following the end of the war, Everett and Nella Mae began working for themselves as beekeepers, with hives in Texas and Oklahoma. When a crippling drought devastated honey production, Everett and Nella Mae moved themselves and the bees north in 1953, placing hives in southern South Dakota and northern Nebraska. They chose to live in the Ainsworth area because of the quality and good taste of the water. Many of the ranch families they met while placing and tending the bees became lifelong fast friends. During the warm season, Everett and Nella Mae were easily spotted because of the white coveralls they always wore when working the bees, and were known by many along the back roads during trips to bee yards from Rose, Nebraska and into South Dakota near White River and Huron. Even after a long day's work, Nella Mae always enjoyed working in her flower beds, and was especially fond of anything red.
Nella Mae and Everett retired from the bee business in 1976 and moved to Springview where they enjoyed outdoor and indoor activities with friends and had more time to travel, often visiting family and friends who lived several states away. Nella Mae continued to collect unusual rocks and antique china during her travels, even after Everett's death in 1986. Nella Mae always enjoyed spending time with friends, and was always ready for a game of cards, dominoes or marbles. She was a fierce competitor and always played to win. Nella Mae was a fine seamstress who enjoyed embroidering in quiet moments, and will be remembered as a strong-willed and determined person who would press on until the goal was attained.
Nella Mae is survived by her nephew, John Cockrell of Canyon, Texas, who is the son of her brother Jack Cockrell, and by nine nieces and nephews born to her sister Vera Pittman, including Leon Pittman of Shawnee, Oklahoma and Melvin Pittman of California. She will be missed by all those who came to know and love her.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, March 7, 2012 at the Hoch Funeral Home in Ainsworth, Nebraska, with Father Randy Goeke serving as Celebrant for the service. Special CD selections of "Amazing Grace and "This Is My Father's World" were offered. Pallbearers were Jerry Doke, Larry Doke, Ernie Van Horn and Dale Andersen. Burial was held in the Mount Hope Cemetery in Springview.
