Jesse L. Adkins was born Sept. 23, 1932, in Lodi, Mich. At about the age of six, after the death of his mother, the family moved to Arizona for about one year. Thereafter, they moved to Idaho, where his dad and family built a resort called Pineridge near New Meadows, Idaho. At the age of 13, Jesse left home to work on a ranch where he learned to run equipment, and was also a sheepherder for six months.

At the age of 17, the Korean War was breaking out and Jesse and a few friends decided to join the Army. Jesse served with the combat engineers working with mine fields and explosives for 14 months. In Korea, Jesse was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and was also awarded the Bronze Star for valor.

After returning to the states, he was stationed in Seattle, where he served in the armed service police, walking a beat in Seattle, and later on was assigned to train patrol from Seattle to Miles City, Mont. Jesse signed up for another three-year term and was shipped to Munich, Germany, and was honorably discharged in 1955.

Jesse moved to McCall, Idaho, where he logged with his brother for about one year. He then moved to Orofino, Idaho, and continued to log while he attended a G.I. Flight School and attained his commercial and flight instructor license and began to teach student pilots and flew the Idaho back country for about 5,000 hours of backcountry flying.

In August 1961, Jesse lost the rudder section of his 1928 Fairchild airplane and crashed at Moose Creek Ranger Station. He was disabled for about one year and went to work for Bankers Life and Casualty Co. in 1962. Jesse sold insurance in Orofino for about five years and then moved to Lewiston, where he was an agent.

In 1978, he met Chari M. Fournier, who was a secretary for Bankers Life. They got married on June 5, 1978, and moved to Coeur d'Alene.

Jesse was a member of and served as a foredeck sailor on a sailboat racing team, which won many races on Lake Coeur d'Alene. He completed his GED degree at North Idaho College, as well as his degree as an L.U.T.C.F. in insurance. Jesse served as a manager for Bankers Life for about eight years and as an agent the rest of his 41 years of insurance career.

Jesse and Chari moved to Sagle in 1988 and, on Nov. 21, 1988, Jesse was baptized at the First Christian Church by Chuck Wigton. He loved serving the Lord and his church as a deacon and elder, and enjoyed doing all kinds of volunteer work, including preaching an occasional sermon. One of Jesse's highlights of life was when he baptized his son John. Jesse also loved to memorize scripture from the bible.

Jesse loved traveling the southwest with his wife Chari in their fifth wheel and exploring Anasasi Indian ruins. Jesse was a member and past Exalted Ruler of the Sandpoint Elks Lodge, where he loved to play golf. He was a member of the Panhandle Shrine Club and was a past president, the VFW and First Christian Church.

Jesse is survived by his wife Chari Adkins; sons Michael and Terri Adkins, Omaha, John and Sherry Adkins, Coeur d'Alene; daughter Linda Ruffcorn, Squiem, Wash.; grandchildren Brack and Shayla, Coeur d'Alene, Nathan and Brayton, Squiem, Wash.; five brothers; five sisters; and stepmother Onalee Crawford.

Memorials may be made to the Building fund of First Christian Church, 201 N. Division, Sandpoint ID 83864.
