Funeral services for Mathew F. Gretz, who passed away Sunday, June 12,at the Fairview Hospital, Minneapolis, after a lingering illness, were held Friday, June 17, at 10 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church at Faribault. The requiem mass was offered by the Rev. Monsignor J. P. Foley. Burial was at the Calvary Cemetery at Faribault. The pallbearers were six nephews, David Gretz, Mankato; Gerald Sullivan, Dennison and Norman Taylor, Paul Gretz, John Gretz and Stephen Gretz of Faribault, Gregory Gretz, also a nephew, served as altar boy. Mathew Gretz, son of the late Bernard and Mary Jane Gretz, was born February 12, 1898, in Dakota County, where he attended grade school and Cannon Falls HIgh School. He later attended Mankato Commercial College. In 1925, he came to Faribault where he was employed as bookkeeper for the Tom Jirik Lumber Co. In 1927, he went to St. Paul where he went to work for the Gould National Battery Co., where he worked for 33 years. On May 7, 1935, he was married to Helen G. Haugen of Des Lacs, North Dakota, at St. Paul. Mr. and Mrs. Gretz made their home in Minneapolis from 1938 until the time of his death. He is survived by his wife, Helen; one son, Thomas; five sisters, Mrs. William Sullivan (Barbara) of Dennison and Mrs. Rufus Taylor (Margaret), Mrs. Ben Lindgren (Kathryn), Mrs. Clarence Anderson (Cecelia) and Mrs. David Minnette (Mary) of Faribault and by four brothers, William of Mountain View, California, and Nicholas, Charles and Laurence of Faribault. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, John, Michael and Carl and one sister, Mrs. Ed Severson (Ann). Relatives and friends attended the funeral from Berthold, North Dakota, West Concord, Coon Rapids, Mankato, Dennison, Cannon Falls, Hastings, River Falls, Wisconsin, Council Bluffs, Iowa, Waseca, St. Paul and Minneapolis.
