Bender, Joseph D., son of Daniel J. and Lucy (Sindlinger) Bender, was born Aug. 20, 1876, in Johnson Co., Iowa; died April 19, 1961, at Pleasantview Home, Kalona, Iowa; aged 84 y. 7 m. 30 d. In Sept. 1898, he was married to Salena Shetler, who died July 29, 1933. Surviving are one son and 3 daughters (Gertrude-Mrs. Jonas Gnagey, Kalona; Myrtle-Mrs. Lewis Slaubaugh and Gerald, of Parnell; and Evelyn-Mrs. Tillman Weaver, Wellman), 11 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and one brother (Amelius, Wellman). One daughter, 3 sisters, and 3 grandchildren also preceded him in death. He was a member of the West Union Church, where funeral services were held April 22, in charge of Herman E.
