Wallace was with the family when they moved from Valley County, Nebraska to Kimball, Nebraska in 1920. He died of diphtheria at age 4 in 1924, following surgery for the problem. The surgery took place on the family dining room table, while the family watched.

His mother wrote this regarding Wallace: "Born in Mira Valley 9 1/2 miles south of Ord, Nebr. Dr. Hemphill, physician. Aunt Maud Hastings, nurse. Weight at birth 9 1/4 lbs. Named for his paternal grandfather Walter Scott White. Moved with his parents to Kimball, Nebr. when he was 16 months of age. He was 3 1/2 years when the family moved to the Rodman farm 4 miles north of town (Kimball). Living there about 13 months. Moved back to Kimball on May 17, 1924 where three weeks later he died. He was in bed a week with measles, along with Lewis and Kenneth all having gotten them from Durwin. About the time he got up he developed a bad cough, which turned into double pneumonia with diphtheria culture, which caused his death in two days. He had straight, light hair and brown eyes."
