Andre Louis Knoppert was born on September 18th,1947 in Ansterdam,Holland in the Netherlands.Andre and his family came to the United States when he was 12 years old and made Salt Lake City,Utah their home.(They spoke not a word of English when they came to Utah).Andre was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.Andre graduated from South High School in Salt Lake City in June of 1967.
Andre joined the Marines in 1968 and started his tour in Vietnam on June 16th,1968.Then for Lance Corporal Andre Knoppert of the United States Marine Corps,died May the 8th,1968 at the age of 21 when he stepped on an enemy landmine near the villiage of Da Nang in Vietnam.Andre was a Surperior Marine,thoroughly reliable and professionally competent,his Captain wrote. American Citizenship was awarded to him posthumously.He went to Vietnam, a man without a country because Andre lost his Dutch Citizenship by enlisting in the Marines,but had been told he would have to wait until he returned from Vietnam to become an American Citizen.Andre was a week from coming home when he was killed in Vietnam.
Andre is survived by his sisters,Alice(Roude)Hoole,Johanna(Andy)Slinger both of Salt Lake,Els(Jelle)DeBour,Ansterdam,Holland,Marienne(Gregor)Venetz,Phoenix,Arizona,and Anja(David) Hatch of Columbus,Georga.Andre is preceeded in death by his Mother who passed away in 1963 and his Father who died at home of an apparent heart attach in April of 1966. It took a week for Andre's body to be shipped home from Vietnam before a Funeral could be held his honor.Andre was buried in the Valley View Memorial Park Cemetery in West Valley City,Utah where full Military Services took place.
