Dr. Robert R. Bigelow, 85, of Oak Ridge, passed away on Thursday, January 13, 2005.

Dr. Bigelow was born on Feb. 3, 1919, in Pittsburgh, PA, to the late Cornelia and Charles Glenford Bigelow. He graduated from Hammond (Indiana) High School in 1936 and earned a B. S. degree in 1943 from the University of Chicago, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. During his internship at Billings Hospital in Chicago, he met Marlys Groth, an obstetrical nurse, whom he married in 1944. He served as a Captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corp from 1945 to 1947 and completed his residency in General Surgery at Billings Hospital in 1949.

Dr. Bigelow came to Oak Ridge with his young family in 1949 and practiced general surgery until his retirement in 1985. His family said that his dedication to the healing ministry was fortified by an unwavering Christian faith that was evidenced by a prayer session in each of his pre-surgery preparations.

In 1979 Dr. Bigelow received the Columbus Award" an annual presentation by the local Knights of Columbus to Oak Ridgers who have distinguished themselves in service to the community" especially in public office. Dr. Bigelow was cited for his ten years as chairman of the Oak Ridge Board of Education (195.7-1967). He served as the first president of Contact (1975) and on the Parenting Board of Directors" Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors (1978-1982), and United Fund Board of Directors. He was a member of the Oak Ridge Symphony and Oak Ridge Community Band.

Dr. Bigelow was an active member of Faith Lutheran Churc~ serving on the Board of Elders and singing in the choir for many years. For over a decade local residents were holiday guests at the Bigelow home at 103 Norris Lane when the family served refreshments after the lighting of a large blue spruce in their front yard followed by Christmas caroling.

Dr. Bigelow was honored by the following organizations: Alpha Omega Alpha, Sigma Xi, Fellow American Society of Surgeons, and Fellow Southeastern Surgical Congress.

Dr. Bigelow is survived by his wife of 60 years, Marlys, three sons, Robert R. Bigelow, Jr., of Oak Ridge~ Dr. William Bigelow (Kathleen) of Staunton, Virginia; and Dr. James Bigelow (Mary Ann) of Missoula, Montana; two daughters, Mary (Dan) Huntoon of Wenham, Massachusetts and Anne Bigelow of Atlanta, Georgia; ten grandchildren, Thomas, Jonathan, Andrew and William Huntoon of Wenham, Massachusetts, Robert, Matthew and Amy Bigelow of Staunton, Virginia and Sarah, Adam and Hannah Bigelow of Missoula, Montana~ a brother, Jack (Laurie) Bigelow of Oak Ridge~ and many nephews and nieces. His brother Glen Bigelow predeceases him.

Funeral services will be held at Faith Lutheran Church, Oak Ridge, Tennessee at 2:30 PM on Monday, January 17, 2005 with Pastor James Evers officiating. The family will receive friends from 12 to 2:30 PM at the church prior to the funeral. Private internment will be at Anderson Memorial Gardens.
