NOTE #1:
"George Gebhard last name was changed from Gebhard to English Kephart per letter of 26 Dec 1965 from Great Granddaughter Gussie G. Burgett."

NOTE #2:
"George Kephart was at the Battle of the Thames (Moraviantown, Canada) where his regiment is credited with killing Tecumseh after first breaking through the British lines."
This is noted in other historical references as well.

NOTE #3:
"(George) Kiphart was a member of Johnson's Regiment, Mounted, Kentucky Vols. 8th May 1813 Henry Co., Ky. Discharged 20th Oct. 1813.Served under Captain William M. Rice, under the command of Col. Richard Johnson."
Also in other historical references.

Parents
Charles Gebhard Sr(1760- ) & Anna Dorotha HENTZEL/HANSEL (1762-1830) Appear on his baptismal record; god parents were Johann & George Hentzel.
George was born between 6 & 7 pm, on 16 Jun 1786.

Grandparents
Hans Jacob Gebbhard/t (1727-1800) & Barbara STAUFFER (1731-1793)

Great Grandparents
Heinrich Gebbhardt (1699-1770) & Maria Catharina ANDREAS (1703-1793)

As best I can tell this Gebbhard/t family line came from Switzerland. Records vary with the use of the "t", and with the new English Kiphart, which appears as Kephart. Individuals in the same family spelled it both ways! And "i" would marry "e" spelling preferences as well. My grandfather & his father both used the "i" spelling, though it is on census records with the "e" spelling...it is a frustrating issue in family history research. (M O'B)

Additionally, research indicates several brothers took the Kiphart as their names in Switzerland, before American born sons did the same. One record says it was a right given after military service (like the land bounty awards).
