Robert R. "Bob" Ellenburg, 73, of Myers Circle in Mosheim, died Wednesday at Johnson City Medical Center after a brief battle with cancer.

Mr. Ellenburg served two years in the U.S. Army and retired from the U.S. Air Force, after 20 years of service. He served two tours of duty in the Vietnam War and was awarded a Purple Heart, a Bronze Star, and other combat and commemorative medals.

After retirement from the USAF, he was employed with the U.S. Capitol Police Force in Washington, D.C., for 12 years.

Mr. Ellenburg then returned to his "roots" in
Mosheim.

He was one of the original members of "The Old Men's Club," which erected the large flag pole and, for several years, kept the American Flag flying on a hill above Mosheim on Highway 11E.

Mr. Ellenburg was also involved in other patriotic projects, which are still in use.

He was a member of the Mosheim Ruritan Club, having served as president, and was a former member of Mosheim Masonic Lodge.

The family said he enjoyed delivering Meals-on-Wheels for the Senior Citizens Center, until his health forced him to retired from this project. They also said that his battle with cancer was courageous.

Survivors include his wife: Elizabeth "Libby" Ellenburg; a son: James Ellenburg of Cologne, Germany; a sister: Jean Highsmith of Greeneville; and three stepchildren: Cathy Anderson, Craig Anderson, and Cliff Anderson, all of Johnson City.

He was a son of the late James Ernest and Agnes Klein Ellenburg and was preceded in death by his daughter: Sylvana Ellenburg; a sister: Marion Oak; and two brothers: Ernest Ellenburg and Kenn R. Ellenburg.

The family will receive friends from 6-9 Friday evening at Rose Hill Funeral Home.

Family and friends will meet at 11 o'clock Saturday morning in Mount Pleasant Cemetery for a graveside service. The Rev. Richard Long will officiate.

Veterans of Foreign Wars, Andrew Johnson Post #1990, will conduct a military graveside rite.
