David Ballentine was born March 12, 1828, in Scotland, the son of John Ballentine and Mary Smith Ballentine. He came to America with his parents when young.
In the summer of 1802, he came back to Ohio to visit family and the following information was in a local newspaper:
"The Hillsboro Gazette" Hillsboro, Ohio July 18, 1902
David Ballentine of Atlantic City, Iowa, who visited his niece, Mrs. C. A. Puckett recently, while swinging in a hammock at the home of his brother, who is the father of Mrs. Puckett at Berryville, on the 6th inst., was thrown out on his head and suffered a fracture of a bone in his neck. The bone is pressing on his spin and causing paralysis of his entire body with the exception of his left hand. A counsel of physicians have decided that his injuries are necessarily fatal, owing to his age and his death is expected at any moment. His suffering is intense. The families, who had anticipated so much pleasure from his summer visit with them, are inconsolable, although no blame can be attached to anyone. Lynchburg Record
