Ruth Shirlie Stunes was born November 1, 1923, at Mitchell, to Charles and Carrie (Reed) Hathaway. She grew up and attended country school at Platte. On April 18, 1959, she married Richard Stunes at Mitchell. She was a resident of Artesian from 1963 until 2001, when she moved to Mitchell. She had been a resident of the Good Samaritan Center in Howard since 2009. She was a member of the Salvation Army Church, the VFW Auxiliary and American Legion Auxiliary.
She is survived by one son, Steve Stunes of Madison, SD; two daughters, Debra Olson and husband, John of Battle Creek, NE and Suzanne Callahan and husband, Robert of Mitchell; nine grandchildren and six great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Delbert Cross, her daughter, Patricia Harmon in 2000, her husband Richard Stunes in 2001, five brothers: Robert, Paul, Charles, Richard and Kenneth Hathaway and three sisters: Laura Ramstead, Winifred Kaale and Jean Butler.
