He was born Aug. 23, 1938, in Greeley to Wade and Laura Helms.
On September 29, 1962, he married Michele Carole Rice. They later divorced.
He was the fifth of seven children. He attended school at West Pawnee and Grover school. He graduated high school in 1957. He joined the U.S. Army in the fall of 1957. He was stationed in Fort Carson and Fort Sill, Okla. After his discharge from the Army, he lived in Pine Bluffs, Wyo. Mr. Helms worked at the Lindbergh Elevator and for various farmers in the Pine Bluffs and Hereford areas.
He worked in the oil field in western Nebraska but was injured in a fall from the rig. Mr. Helms moved to the Greeley area in the early 1970s. When he was no longer able to live alone, he moved to Denver and lived at the Rocky Mountain Health Care Center in Denver. In August 2005, he moved to Fort Collins and lived at the Health Care Center.
Survivors are two sisters, Twila Schoene of Belfair, Wash., and Pauline Herman of Rawlins, Wyo.; five daughters, Rosa and husband Adolfo Garcia, Lori and husband Jose Garcia, Frances and husband Andy Redden, Ramona Helms and Jane and husband Rosendo Saavedra, all of Pine Bluffs; a son, Elvin Frank Helms Jr. and wife Lynnette of Pine Bluffs; 21 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Phyllis and husband Bill Neal, Loralta and Thelms Helms, a brother, Russel Stanford Helms II and a brother-in-law, Gene Schoene and one son, Wade George Helms, who died in a car crash in 1993.
Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Grover Senior Center.
Friends may visit from 10-11 a.m. Tuesday at the Grover Senior Center.
