Bertha Mabis father is unknown but last name was thought to be Carrico or Jackson. He was from the Wythe / Grayson County areas of Virginia.

Bertha Mabis mother is Bertha Grace Frye Moore who married Charles A. Moore, both of Wythe County, Virginia between 1900-1903. Charles and Grace were the parents of one child, Samuel Kahle Moore born September 1903. Charles died after his son was born, between 1904-1909. Grace never remarried but had a second child, Bertha Jackson Moore out of wedlock. She left her son in the care of her parents, Samuel Thomas and Fannie S. Fisher Frye and left Wythe County, Virginia. Her daughter was born in October 1910 possibly in Wythe County, Virginia. The 1920 census records show Grace and her daughter, Bertha living in Baltimore, Maryland. In 1921, Grace moved with her daughter to Philo, Illinois. They were roomers in the home of Robert and Emma Penman. Grace was named in Mr. Penman's will in 1932 and given 80+ acres of farmland.

Bertha Mabis mother, Grace never acknowledged that her daughter, Bertha was born out of wedlock nor did she tell anyone that she had a son in Virginia.

It is believed that Bertha Mabis was born in Virginia. The 1920 census records for Maryland show she was born in West Virginia. The 1930 census records for Illinois show she was born in Virginia. Her obituary states Baltimore, Maryland. Her marriage certificate states Virginia.
