The 1900 US Census record for Columbia, Richland, SC enumerates her as Maria J and state that she and Edwin had been married for 26 years. It appears that she never gave birth but had an adopted son, George Edwin Newcomer. All were born in SC.
Per South Carolina Deaths 1944-1955, a collection found on FamilySearch.org, George's parents were Edwin Newcomer and Janie Mixon. Conflict: her obituary gives her brother's last name as Saxon. However, the memorial for Mrs. C. E. Martin (Charity Elvira Martin) gives her maiden name as Mixon. Please email me if you know who her parents were.

Found in The State 09 December 1907: Another home has been entered unexpectedly by death. While apparently in normal condition of health and in good spirits, Mrs. E. H. Newcomer died suddenly yesterday at 11:30 a.m. at her home in Edgewood. She was eating an apple and was apparently feeling quite well, when she sank back in her chair and was dead. She was the wife of Capt. E. H. Newcomer, one of the officials at the Columbia postoffice, where he has been for years. The deceased was 58 years of age, and a member of the Presbyterian church. She leaves one brother, Mr. L. J. Saxon of Brookland, and two sisters, Mrs. B. E. Gurley of Columbia and Mrs. C. E. Martin of Woodford.
