Mary Anna, daughter of James McCaslan and the former Margaret Bates Foster, was born March 10th 1842 in the area known as Savannah River Regiment in Abbeville County, South Carolina. Her parents were both from Scotch-Irish families who had settled the back country of South Carolina in the early 1760's.

Mary Anna married Capt. Benjamin Smith Barnwell on February 10th 1867. Capt. Barnwell was a CSA veteran, whose family had large holdings near Beaufort, South Carolina. They had three known children:
Mary Sue (1872-1904)
William McCaslan (1876-1955)
James Foster (1878-1943)
