Though Lawson's stone shows his death as July 9, 1890, his death record indicates he died on July 8, 1890, at 76 years old, just four months shy of his 77th birthday. The record was written as "Sawson Beale," a farmer of Southampton County, Virginia,, married to Martha Beale.

Edna Overby, a descendant, said, "Lawson had 4 different wives and 25 children. He owned a tremendous amount of farm land on the outskirts of Branchville, Virginia. He gave large farms to three of his sons: Frank, Sam & Ben. Son Carr ran off in his teen years, did not return until he was grown & married. He was disinherited and given $50."

The Virginia 1870 Census for Boykins, Virginia, lists Lawson at age 56, as a farmer with $5000 real estate & $1500 personal estate. He was then with his 4th wife Martha, who was 30.
His 4 wives and their wedding dates:
(1) Cherry Jones on 19 Nov 1832
(2) Mary Jane Beale on 03 Apr 1836
(3) Rhody (Rhodi, Rody) Turner Harris on 27 May 1856
** Rhody & Lawson are 2nd great grandparents to Kitty Lackey (not ggrandparents).
(4) Martha Sarah Holland on 10 Jul 1862.
