Lyla was a member of Blessed Sacrament in West Fargo. She was also a lifetime member of the VFW and the Disabled American Veterans. Lyla was a kind and giving person. She enjoyed her family, gardening, crocheting, and the occasional trip to the casino. She worked a variety of jobs over the years including working in the beet fields, potato picking, Woolworths, Ben Franklin, S&L Department Store, Jiffy Fry, and as a nursing assistant at St. Francis Hospital. At one point, she even had a state cream testing license. Lyla obtained her LPN license in 1972 per government waiver after her many years as a nursing assistant. She was working at the Riverview Nursing Home in Crookston until her retirement in 1994 and proceeded to work for the Lutheran Social Services providing respite cares.
Lyla is survived by her special friend of Duluth, MN; 4 sons, 3 daughters. She also leaves behind eighteen grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren; a brother James, and sister Marilyn.
Lyla is preceded in death by her husband, Lester Johnson; both parents, David and Evelyn Altepeter; daughter, Louise Mae Johnson; and three brothers, Gerald, Kenneth, and Donald Altepeter.
